CIRCULARITY WORKS: LET'S GIVE EVERY BOTTLE A SECOND LIFE!

Circular Economy is at the forefront of our policies. Our members market their products in fully recyclable packaging materials, such as PET, glass or aluminium, which are valuable resources. Natural mineral and spring water producers are more than ever committed to embrace circularity and partner with the whole supply chain to give all their packaging a second life.

MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE TO INCREASE COLLECTION AND RECYCLING

Beverage packaging already achieves higher than average recycling rates, including those for PET bottles, which is the most recycled form of plastic packaging in the EU. It will require a collaborative effort between all value-chain actors to reach our shared ambitions for Europe. That is why NMWE is actively involved in several pan-European initiatives to promote a Circular Economy and collaborate closely with public authorities and consumers.

In 2018, our industry pledged to reach 90% collection and use at least 25% of recycled PET by 2025. PET is 100% recyclable and a very precious and versatile resource. Our sector is determined to give every bottle a second life.

To make their bottles fully circular, natural mineral and spring water producers need a consistent supply of high-quality, food contact, recycled material. To ensure the high quantity and quality of recycled PET for instance, separate collection is essential. This can occur either via existing well-performing curbside collection or by the introduction of well-designed Deposit Refund Systems. Efficient collection systems are key to ensuring that this becomes a reality.
