The latest report on PET recycling in Europe highlights significant advancements in the PET recycling value chain.

The beverage sector is the central driving force in the continued development of PET recycling, with beverage bottles making up the vast majority of collected and recycled PET (rPET) in Europe.

The new ICIS report estimates that three quarters of beverage bottles were collected for recycling in 2022, up from 64% in 2020, the previous period analysed. The figures in the report indicate that 39% of the rPET generated was utilised in new beverage bottles, which themselves have reached 24% rPET content on average, an increase of 7 percentage points in 2020. The increase in bottle-to-bottle recycling is an important step towards reaching ambitious recycled content targets laid down in the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

However, while progress has been made through collaborative efforts, regional disparities in collection and recycling rates persist which must be addressed. In that context, the PPWR proposal’s ambition to mandate the roll-out of Deposit and Return Systems (DRS) across Europe is a positive step.
